Looking Past Ourselves

On that day people will regard their Maker, and their eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel; they will not have regard for the altars, the work of their hands, and they will not look to what their own fingers have made, either the sacred poles or the altars of incense. Isaiah 17:7-8 NRSV

Little Boy Crying There is a reason the second year of life is called the terrible twos. Children go through what Erickson calls a time of egocentrism. They see the world revolving around them. They believe themselves to be the center of the universe. Of course this frustrates parents no end.

I wonder if God doesn’t look at us and feel the same kind of frustration at times. I know that more times than I want to admit, I see myself at the center of things. I put my wants first. I do what I think is right. At those times I probably look like a spoiled two-year old to God.

Fortunately, there’s hope. Isaiah saw a day when God’s people would finally learn that they were not at the center of the universe. God, in God’s own time, and by God’s gracious grace, would bring his people to the place where they would put God where God belonged, at the center of the universe.

They would see and acknowledge God as their Maker. They would look to God for guidance, for help, for strength and provision. They would abandon their self-serving practices, and worship and serve the Lord in humility.

MP900401432[1]This is what Advent is all about. It is the time for us to look past ourselves and to  see what God is doing. It is our time to step off the throne and make room in our lives for the coming King. Those who do will find their faith maturing, and their lives coming into proper perspective.

Will you join me in using the days leading up to Christmas as time to put Jesus Christ at the center of the universe? He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. We are not the Way. We are not the Truth, and without Jesus we can’t enjoy the gift of eternal life.

Let’s give God and God’s Son their rightful place in our lives!

Which Way Do I Go?

He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. Psalm 25:9 (NRSV)

MP900405652[1]Have you ever come to a fork in the road of life and asked God which way to go? Have you ever felt like you were walking in the dark and you needed God to light your way? Have you ever felt frozen by indecision and cried out to God for guidance?

We would all probably say, “Yes” to most of those questions. We know what it is like to feel lost and confused. We’ve been uncertain about where to go or what to do next. It’s in those moments that we are most likely to call on God, and to ask the Lord for help.

The question is, who does God help? Who does God lead? In Psalm 25, David gives us the answer. God leads the humble. He shows the humble what is right, and God reveals God’s own ways to them.

God leads the humble.MP900390083[1]

Why is that? Perhaps it is because the humble know they don’t have all the answers. They recognize their own inadequacies and their need for   God. They are open to help, always ready and willing to look beyond themselves to God for guidance and for strength.

In other words, the humble are aware, and they are open. The humble know their strengths and their vulnerabilities. They also know God. They know that God is more than adequate to make up for all their inadequacies. They know that God holds the keys to their future, and to the destiny of humankind.

The humble are aware.

Knowing all that, they leave themselves open. Open to the wisdom that created the universe. Open to the mercy and love that redeems human hearts. Open to the guiding hand that holds the future.

The humble stay open.

Humility leaves us aware of God, and open to receiving what God wants  to give. Humility opens the door of our minds to God, allowing God’s truth to saturate our minds. In a word, humility makes us teachable. That’s a good thing because those who can be taught can be led.

Why not let God lead you today. Stand humbly before the Lord and ask for help.

God will light your way with truth, and gently lead you on!

Stay Open and Aware Today!

God, you know the way I need to go. You know which turns to take and which roads to avoid. I want to walk in your ways. Help me to stay open to your truth and to the leading of your Spirit. Keep me aware of your presence and power, and humble enough to always follow you.
