Act Now!

Just as you do not know how the breath comes to the bones in the mother’s womb, so you do not know the work of God, who makes everything. Ecclesiastes 11:5 NRSVMP900385802[1]

John Wesley wondered if we don’t understand how life enters the bones forming in the womb, how could we begin to know what God is doing and will do with each of us? How could begin to explore the all the purposes of God and methods of God’s grace? Some things are just beyond us.

If we don’t know what God is going to do today or tomorrow, or what God’s plans are for the future, then what are we supposed to do? Wesley suggests there is only one thing to do, use the present opportunity. Take what you have now and use it for God’s glory. Look at the needs in front of you right now and respond to them. Grab hold of the situation God is giving you, and step through the open door. Act now!

I agree. In the face of mystery, act now! That’s all we can do.

Consulting Crystal Ball for Future of Earth We don’t have a crystal ball that lets us see what the future holds or what God is going to do with us. All we know is what God places in front of us at any given moment.

A wise person uses what they have. A wise person responds to present needs. A wise person acts now!

An Extraordinary Life

What does the future hold for you?

No one knows.

Actually, the truth is that no one can know.

1 Corinthians 2:9 (20 kb)

God has prepared an extraordinary life for you! It goes beyond anything you could ask or imagine.

So maybe today would be a good time to look beyond the limits you have put on yourself.

Why not open yourself to all God’s purposes and plans for you?

Step forward to a life without limits!

my Shepherd is my Hope

MP900443194[1]Hope requires much more than positive thinking or a  Pollyanna attitude. It requires faith in the one who holds the future.

That’s why I find myself coming back so often to Psalm 23. It reminds me of the Good Shepherd who leads me, and strengthens my faith in a future that he has already prepared for me.

If you are anything like me, you probably take comfort in those words too. So I invite you to click here to view a beautiful video setting of Psalm 23. Then let its comforting words fill your heart with God’s presence and your day with real hope!

Envisioning Tomorrow

j0178811 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God. Psalm 43:5 NRSV

What do you see when you look into the future? Is there a light at the end of your tunnel?

The psalmist knew that what you and I look at today colors how we feel about tomorrow. I agree. When I see circumstances pressing in, and trouble coming my way, pessimism starts knocking at my door.

That’s because my focus starts influencing my feelings, which in turn color my vision of the future. Focusing only on the problems I have, leaves me discouraged. So I need a different focus to be able to feel hopeful, and to see the future God has for me.

Thankfully, my faith reminds me that yesterday’s defeats and today’s challenges are not the only things that determine my future. Even in the most troubling times, I know that God is in control. Not only that:j0443715

God is my light and my salvation. No matter how difficult things get, God is present and involved in my life.

God is my refuge and strength. God is my help in times of trouble.

Jesus is my Good Shepherd. The hand of the Lord guards me and guides my every step.

I know that if I see challenges, but stay focused on God’s presence and plan for me, I will feel more hopeful, and more optimistic about tomorrow. That kind of focus grounds me, helps me put things in perspective, and keeps me trusting in God’s steadfast love and faithfulness!

Remember, the future will always look bleak, unless God is in the picture.

Let’s join the psalmist by focusing our hope in God, and opening our eyes to a bright and glorious vision of tomorrow!
