Our Good Shepherd

j0354665 We all need a shepherd. We all need someone we can turn to guard, guide and provide for us.

Thanks to Jesus, we not only have a shepherd, we have the Good Shepherd!

Psalm 23 is an inspiring description of the Good Shepherd, and what he does for us.

When the Going Gets Tough

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen. Psalm 41:13 NRSV

David wrote Psalm 41 when he was down for the count. He had sinned, and he was suffering. His enemies were gathering around him, like vultures circling their prey. Even one of David’s closest friends turned against him.

So what does David do? He turns to God. He knows he is down, but he is not out! David prays for God’s gracious hand to help him. Then he does something amazing. He affirms who God is, and praises God for what God has done.

When the going gets tough, the tough go to God!

In the midst of defeat, David’s faith rises from the ashes of suffering. He remembers all God has done, and finishes this psalm with an exclamation of praise!

GOD is great…ALL the time!

Real faith tries to look past the rising tide of trouble, focusing instead on God’s great goodness. Unfortunately, that kind of faith is not all that common. Fear often fixes our eyes on the problems around us, never letting us look past the mounting challenges. When that happens, we are easily convinced the odds are against us, and we cut and run.

The problem with that strategy is that it leaves out God. Instead of turning to the Lord, and inviting God to help us, we settle for a quick fix. In the end, we may escape our immediate problems, but we may miss the opportunity to live out our faith, and do all that God is calling us to do.j0443264

Today, God is looking for people whose faith takes center stage, no matter what the circumstances are. That’s easier said than done, unless we realize that God’s mercy is from everlasting to everlasting.

Living by faith means remembering that God is God on the good days and the bad days. God is there in the storm and in the calm. So even though our situations change, our God always stays the same. No matter what may come our way, God will always be the rock of our salvation!

When you and I step forward in faith, like David did, then God can step into our need and accomplish God’s purposes.

So why not look beyond your mountain today. Praise God for who God is, and for all that God is doing in you and through you.

Then, fix your eyes on Jesus, and let him lead you through!

Great God,

You are the rock of my salvation. Keep me safe in the shadow of your wings. Help me to stay focused on your greatness, especially when the winds blow, and life’s storms furiously rage. Then, lead me to victory!
