A Love Like None Other

The LORD said to me again, “Go love a woman who has a lover and is an adulteress, just as the LORD loves the people of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.” Hosea 3:1 NRSV

In one of the most surprising instructions given in the Bible, God directs the prophet Hosea to bring a prostitute into his home. This powerful illustrates the kind of love God is ready to show God’s people, despite their complete lack of loyalty and devotion.

But it does more than that. It also gives us a window into how things look from God’s perspective. Just imagine what it’s like loving those who do reciprocate that love, forgiving those who repeatedly break their promises and vows, and seeking after those who willfully wander away over and over again.

I find that when I understand how someone else sees things, it changes how I relate to that person. It brings me closer to them, helps me communicate more openly with them and deepens our relationship. Seeing not just God’s love, but seeing things from the perspective of the One who gives that love, changes how I relate to my Lord.

In today’s video, the kind of love God shows toward us is powerfully illustrated. By using the metaphor of a marriage, we get a fresh glimpse into what the love is like.

Born To Love

Beloved, let us love on another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1John 4:7-8 NRSV

Every birth is a miracle. But every birth follows a basic principle: What was becomes what is. A woman gives birth to a child. A dog gives birth to a puppy. A sheep gives birth to a lamb. In each case, the newborn becomes what the parent was. If you want to know what the parent is like, just look at the child.

We not only inherit our physical characteristics, we are endowed with a spiritual inheritance too. When we experience rebirth into the new life offered by Jesus Christ, we inherit some of the basic characteristics of God’s nature.

If God is love, then we will love too. What God is, becomes what we are.

So be who you are. Do what you were born to do. Love!

What’s Freedom For?

Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. Psalm 37:5 NRSV

42-15649637July 4 was more than a week ago. The booms and bangs of fireworks have faded. The picnic suppers have been cleaned up, and the patriotic songs put away until next year. But that’s okay, because we paused to remember and celebrate the precious freedoms we have, and the many blessings our country enjoys.

Perhaps the greatest freedom we enjoy is the freedom to believe in God, and to pledge our allegiance to Jesus Christ! So after the fife and drums are packed away, we have to take our hand off our heart, and put it in the hand of the Good Shepherd. Then, and only then, will we be able to fully enjoy the freedoms our country affords. Then, and only then, will we be truly free!

Today’s video illustrates that message through a father’s prayer for his son. Click here to view it. Then pledge your allegiance once again to Jesus Christ!

So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 2 Corinthians 5:17 NRSV

Fanny Crosby was blind. She wrote the words to the well-known hymn, Blessed Assurance. How could she have felt happy and blest when she couldn’t even see? She thought that she lived in physical darkness so she could bring people out of the darkness, and into the light of Christ’s love.

I am not blind, but I share her conviction that I am richly blest by the light and love of Jesus Christ. That light and love has changed everything for me. Jesus has put the past behind me, and is making everything new!

Join me today in affirming the new life you have in Jesus Christ. Let’s sing with Fanny, and tell the world that we too are happy and blest in Jesus!

Life-Changing Stillness

“Be still, and know that I am God!” Psalm 46:10 NRSV

Herbert Benson, a well-known physician developed what has become known as the relaxation response. This is a state of physiological relaxation that helps treat a range of physical illnesses. The key to the relaxation response is taking time each day to focus on just one thing. That thing might be a word or phrase, a sound or a picture.

MP900422325[1]Many people who try the relaxation response find it difficult and frustrating. The first thing that happens is that their minds begin wandering. Keeping centered on one thing is particularly hard for minds conditioned by years of information overload. But with time and persistence many people learn to discipline their focus, and begin to reap powerful results.

Today’s video is not about relaxing, or healing. It’s about being still, which is a key to inner healing and well-being. God wants us to be still, so that we might know and experience the fullness of God’s presence and glory. The problem is that being still doesn’t come easily or naturally. But that doesn’t matter. God still says to be still.

MP900402576[1]Take a moment to be still and watch today’s video. Let its message remind you of what being still actually involves. Then give God a few minutes of your full attention. What you discover will deepen your faith and possibly change your life!

There’s Always Time For Praise!

Extol the LORD our God; worship at his footstool. Holy is he! Psalm 99:5 NRSV

Given who God is, and what God has done, there is one thing we can be certain of: God deserves our praise. God is worthy of all the praise we can give!

That tells me that sandwiched in between everything else that is happening today, I need to give God praise. From the moment my eyes awaken, until my mind settles into sleep, I want and need to give God praise.

Of course it isn’t practical to think that every thought will be one of praise. Some will be given over to work, others to managing daily affairs, and many will be spent thinking about my family concerns. But even in the midst of all those thoughts, God deserves a place.

So why not join me and carve out some space between all the analyzing, decision making and mental wandering you do today. Then fill that space with words of praise and thanksgiving.

Give God some glory. Extol God’s name. Speak a few words of praise to the Mighty King. Tell God how great God is, and how good God has been to you!

Keep It Going!

I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long. Psalm 146:2 NRSV

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAWorship isn’t just for Sunday’s anymore. Worship isn’t just done in hallowed halls, beneath stained glass windows. Worship is for life. It is for wherever we are, and for whatever we might be doing. Worship is for right now!

Of course, you already knew that. The problem isn’t knowing we should worship God in all we do. The problem is worshipping God in all we do. Knowledge doesn’t always translate into action. That’s because too many other things often get in the way.MP900314350[1]

Today’s video asks us to look inside ourselves to see what might be getting in the way of us worshipping God the way God deserves to be worshipped. Click here to watch it.

Then, give God some praise, and keep it going!
