Give Love

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12 NRSV

MP900440970[1] Over the next few days there is going to be a lot of love talk. Valentine hearts will be shared in cards, candy, balloons and flowers. The sweetness of romance will be in the air, at least for some people.

I think romance is one thing and love is something else all together. A person can certainly have both. But not everyone does. For me, romance is nice, but I need love!

Jesus knew that. He knew that we all desperately need love. So he loved like no one ever loved before. He was love incarnate!

Before he left, Jesus told his followers to love like they had been loved. Now we’re about to celebrate a day of love. What does Jesus want us to do? Aside from sharing romantic fantasies printed on greeting cards, what can we do to love one another?

In practical terms, loving means doing what Jesus did. He did whatever it took to built people up. We can do that too!

MP900309143[1] That may be as simple as taking a moment to acknowledge and encourage someone. It might be giving a word of praise, or taking a few moments out of your busy day to sit and have a one-on-one conversation. Those moments can have a powerful impact, especially when frequently shared!

Candy and flowers are good for romance, but love means giving something of yourself. Nothing lets another person know they are loved like giving them the most precious gifts you have, your time and your attention!

So give what Jesus gave, give love!
