Looking From Above

Such are the wicked, always at ease, they increase in riches. But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I perceived their end. Psalm 73:12, 16-17 NRSV

“It’s not fair. It’s just not fair!” MP900442283[1]That was the psalmist’s cry as he looked around and saw the wicked prospering. They knew no pain, no trouble and no plagues.  They dressed themselves in violence and adorned themselves with pride. Their words cut lives to pieces with the sword of malice. They ignored God while basking in riches and lives of ease.

The wicked prosper and the righteous are punished. What good does it do to have a clean heart and innocent hands? This was the psalmist’s cry. His question is the same question many of us ask today.

What good does it do to be good?

After lifting his complaints to God, the psalmist makes a discovery. He steps into the sanctuary of God and finds that his whole perspective changes. MP900443034[1] As he enters the presence of God and stands in the midst of God’s glory, earthy troubles disappear and future hopes are ignited. He stops looking horizontally and starts looking vertically. That gives him a whole new way of seeing things.

Stop looking horizontally. Start looking vertically!

What the psalmist discovered is that from the view down here everything looks unfair. But when we open our eyes to see the heavenly reality of God’s glory, we get a whole new perspective. Looking in to eternity lets us see things on earth very differently. It lets us see that what blossoms on earth today will quicklyMP900411668[1] wither tomorrow. The tide of time and God’s judgment will sweep away those who stand for injustice. They are like a dream that fades away with morning’s first light. They are like chaff that blows away with the wind.

The truth is that everything looks different from God’s perspective. So we need to give ourselves a chance to look through the lens of truth and see things from God’s point of view. We need to step out of our earthly and brutish ways of seeing things. We need to step beyond ignorant lies and foolish assumptions that reject spiritual realities.

Look through the lens of truth.

MP900178940[1] The truth is that no matter what is going on around you, God is with you every step of the way. The Lord is guiding your life with wisdom and counsel. God is your strength, your portion and your refuge!

So fix your eyes on the Lord. Open your mind to understand things from God’s perspective. Get in touch with the truth, and the truth will set you free!

Walk in the Light of Truth!

Prayer:

Lord, I lift my eyes to you. Give me a new perspective on things. Use the truth of your Word to help me see things as you see them. Then guide me in a life that is pleasing and honoring to you, and reveals your goodness and love to all!

Amen.
