One Size Does Not Fit All

Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail. David strapped Saul’s sword over the armor, and he tried in vain to walk, for he was not used to them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these; for I am not used to them.” So David removed them. 1 Samuel 17:38-39 NRSV

Soldiers wear armor. At least the soldiers who want to have a chance at surviving the battle do. So Saul gave David his armor. The helmet, mail and sword were so cumbersome that David quickly removed them.  David believed that he was better off with the tools he knew best, a few stones and a sling.

I have found that in life’s battles David was right, one size does not fit all. One plan of attack does not work in all situations. One psychological principle does not solve everyone’s problems. One Bible promise doesn’t cover every need. There really are different strokes for different folks!

The work of Carl Rogers suggests that the answers we need to the problems we face emerge when we get honest. When we take a honest look at ourselves, our situations, our beliefs and our resources, we will start to see the way ahead. The key is getting honest about what we really want and need. It is getting honest about our fears and failures.It is getting honest about what we really can and can’t do.

That kind of honesty is what David displayed when he rejected Saul’s armor. It is also the kind of honesty that led him to face a giant with nothing but his faith in God and a rock in a sling.

That kind of honesty will do for you what it did for David. It will strip away the unnecessary and unproductive. It will put you on your knees before God. It will open the door of your mind to the work of the  Holy Spirit. It will reveal the solutions that fit you and your situation best!

So, get honest. It is one great way to find the answers that fit you best!
