It is a foolish thing to despise wisdom and to turn away from instruction. Proverbs 1:7 (paraphrased)

There’s a lot of foolish things we do. We spend money on frivolous fads. We say things we don’t mean. We spend time on meaningless pursuits. When we do these things, we waste time, energy and resources.

But even more foolish is pretending that we know it all. Fools despise wisdom. Fools reject instruction.

It’s a dangerous delusion to think that the search for wisdom is a useless endeavor. Life-long learning is really the smart approach.

Most of the Bible’s great figures of faith were life-long learners. Their lives were in no way stagnant. As they sought the Lord, their understanding deepened, their ability to discern and articulate God’s will became sharper, and their faith become stronger. They grew ever closer to God, and became more committed than ever to doing God’s work!

Of course, there were also a number of characters in the Bible who refused to serve God, and who rejected the need to grow in wisdom. They didn’t live stagnant lives either. Their lives spiraled down into a pattern of sin and self-destruction. What tragic results such foolishness brings!

Let’s resolve today to be part of the smart crowd! Let’s seek the Lord, and cultivate a hunger for knowing God. Let’s open ourselves to God’s instruction, and become life-long learners!
